Chapter 11

Again, Sophy was in the silver world, but this time, there was no gurgling brook and no pond. They had been replaced by a meadow filled with an array of wispy flowers. Reveling in the moon’s comforting glow, she stretched herself out on the ground. In the midst of bright poppies and the scent of lavender, she could forget Icelus and the mistakes she had made when talking to him. There was a silence that was full but not overpowering. Peaceful. She gave herself up to it, lost in the dream’s wonder and magic.

She opened her eyes when she sensed the silent presence of another person and stared up at Thanatos. Neither spoke, each patient and studying the other with curiosity. There was a vague awareness that she wasn’t feeling panic or fear under his close observation, but she didn’t attend to it.

Thanatos was the one to break the silence this time. He smiled when he commented, “You are looking well.”

“I feel well,” Sophy agreed. “I feel whole and healthy. I didn’t know I could feel this way.”

“Many people who have been injured do not realize they are wounded till they have healed.”

She chuckled. “That’s exactly what I told Icelus.” Her good mood died away when she thought of him.

“Something troubles you,” he perceived.

“No,” she denied and sat up. Her peace was spoiled. “Well, that is, I am troubled a bit, but it’s nothing important. It’s not as if I’m in any danger or anything.”

Thanatos frowned, watching her finger a swaying flower. Guilt for having said as much as she did gnawed at her. Now he would want an explanation, and she wasn’t comfortable giving one considering Icelus was his brother.

“It’s nothing important,” she said with a forced laugh. “Icelus and I have just had a bit of a rough start.”

“What has he done?” Thanatos was quick to ask. She perceived the change in his tone—suspicious and protective. The new tension in the air was palpable.

“Nothing,” she insisted then groped for the right words to continue. “It’s only that he’s a little forward.” And creepy, her mind supplied. “There are special apples in a garden of Hera’s that grant immortality.”

“Hera’s golden apples.”

She started and looked up, opening her mouth to question him.

“I could not tell you of their existence before,” he explained, reading the thoughts written on her face. “You had to learn of them yourself.”

“Icelus knows about them, too,” she continued. “He said he could get me one if I made it worth the trouble.”

Anger bristled in the air around her, shattering any illusion of peace that might have lingered under the tension. There was an ugly red aura pulsating around Thanatos. She shrank back, frightened of the god who had been patient and kind thus far.

“Did he?” Thanatos stated through gritted teeth.

“I’m sure he doesn’t realize what my situation is,” she assured him, wanting to melt into the earth to hide from this new side of her betrothed. “It’s not as if Morpheus has ever mentioned it. I don’t even think Poppy knew about it till I told her.
