Interlude

In the place outside of this place, the last sands fall in the hourglass of rose gold.

The single bright light that had been shone directly on the glass is joined by another, silhouetting an armoured figure. To a bell sounding, the figure raises its head.

The armour is strange, not the crude plates and bolts once favoured by men, but sinuous overlapping plates and scales, interlocking and moving more smoothly than anything wrought by human hands. Impossible craftsmanship shows a remarkable symmetry in style to the Mask now held in a room somewhere else. Leaf and wave curl and crash in every part of the armour, while beneath them fabrics unseen in centuries smooth and brighten.

An elegantly gloved hand, wrapped in shining plates of bright metal grips the haft of a glaive untouched in all the days of those now living in Trice’s world. A gust of wind whips through the room, fluttering ribbons marked with curved sigils and flushing the dust from ancient banners.

One after another, lights illuminate warriors, kin to the first. Figures who have slept for long ages waken once more.

From a shadowed throne at the back of the room, the unarmoured fingers of a shadowy figure steeple, and an androgynous laugh spills out from the darkness as one after another, the armoured figures step forth into the light…
