Chapter Fourteen

I have a hard time settling down later that evening. Mom soaked in the tub after her meltdown and I ordered room service. Wine for her. Dessert for both of us. After, we got into her bed and watched a movie. We didn’t talk much, but we didn’t need to. I’d already apologized, and we had talked. There was nothing more to say, and after talking so much to the police earlier, it was nice to be quiet.

Mom fell asleep before the movie ended. Getting so emotional had to be exhausting. I should be tired too, but I’m not. As the credits roll, I pick up my phone. So many messages—text and voice. I ignore most of them.
