Robbie was in shock. He backed away from Wilf, who held out a desperate hand.

‘Help,’ the older man croaked out.

Robbie pressed himself into the wall behind him as he saw the ungodly swelling on the right side of Wilf’s face and neck expand before his eyes. The horrific, inflamed bite marks turned purple, each swelling to the size of a fist. Dark tendrils pushed against the surface of the swelling. Wilf’s head became disfigured as the right side ballooned outwards, stretching out his eye and mouth with it. The older man’s face contorted in pain as he collapsed to the floor and rolled to his back, squirming—his hands came up to cradle the expanding flesh.

‘Help,’ he wheezed again. The poor man’s eyes went wide in absolute agony as the swelling continued at an ungodly pace, now looking like a giant, tumorous growth.

Then it exploded in a shower of pus and gore, which coated the walls around them and spurted onto Robbie.

One of Wilf’s eyes rolled in his head, the other having popped free from the pressure. Robbie was able to see the inside of Wilf’s head through the gaping hole now there.

The helpless Deathborn then fell forwards and remained motionless on the ground while blood pooled around him.

‘What the hell!’ Robbie exclaimed, panicked. He couldn’t slow his rapid breathing, and it was a struggle to force himself to move as fear rooted him to the spot. He heard something heavy dragging across the floor and instinctively looked up to the dark doorway ahead. His heart then caught in his mouth.

Standing just inside was a monster he’d never seen before. It had a vaguely humanoid form, perhaps female, judging by the sagging breasts. The creature was bulbous, with thick arms and a wide, stumpy, veiny neck the same width as its head. The face of the creature was slightly human, though it had a mouth much wider than any person, stretching back to the point where its ears should have been, with rows of short, sharp teeth inside. Two fangs at the front hung down over the bottom lip, and Robbie could also see a black, forked tongue dart out and lick the air. The nose of the creature was little more than two slits, and its eyes on the side of its head were wide and amber, with dark, vertical slits as pupils. A mass of lifeless tentacle-like growths sprouted from the rear of the scalp and hung down the back of the creature’s head like nightmarish hair.

The monster pulled its form forward on its strong arms, with its lower body curving behind itself into the darkness, resembling the body of a snake.

Robbie began to sidestep as the vile creature squeezed through the doorframe, its body elongating as required to force itself out of the room. In the light of the hallway, Robbie could see the mottled, scaly skin of the slithering thing, which was a mix of dull greys and pale greens. The creature’s eyes were unblinking, focusing on Robbie with a horrible intensity.
