Chapter 1
Zach thought that he would have had enough of lying down. Several decades in a pine box made oneâs body want for exercise, but his mind was exhausted...he never remembered what happened on the other plane of existence when he returned, but he didnât believe they slept there. The resurrection had drained him.
When he opened his eyes the morning after, Zinny had already started her shower, and he wrapped himself in the nearest piece of cloth before starting downstairs for breakfast. Thoughts of the evening prior came crashing down on him. It wasnât his time with Zinny that occupied him, but rather the ragtag collection of Gillespies he had inherited.
The local grocer, a man named Charles Bateman, had been killed recently. The problem was much more systemic, however.
Ethel had let her cool demeanor go too far, and now the children were out of control. Gina was dead, and Thalia was frustrated to a dangerous extent. Ember was consorting with demons, and she trusted them more than her own community; he had never seen such a backwards creature.
She had left the night before with Acton, but come back alone not too long after. He didnât know what had happened, or where Acton was, and he suspected that the girl didnât either. With a rogue ghost out hunting, and Ember the only feasible target on the island, Zach wasnât sure what to make of his behavior.
Acton took care of the things he had laid claim to, and he didnât just throw them away. When he was done, if he didnât destroy the person or thing outright, he made a very public display of the emancipation. It was troubling, to say the least.
Just as the food finished, he turned around to find the girl watching him with a nervous expression.
She had probably come seeking advice from Zinny. Instead, she got Zach running around half-naked in a towel.
He tried to engage her in conversation, but she kept avoiding his gaze and his questions, which only made him press the issue harder. Something was very wrong, with both her choices and her fate.
She tried to keep her eyes averted, but Zach kept talking to her, and it quickly became too awkward to avoid him as he moved from the table to the oven, tending to breakfast as he set the table and carried on a lively interrogation that mostly focused on her dealings with Acton.
When she had answered what must have been his twentieth question with a short, clipped response, he watched her eyes rest on his feet when he came to stand in front of the chair she was seated in at the table.
