If he thought that his slave’s execution would bring peace to his people or safety for his family, he learned fairly quickly it wouldn’t. Within two weeks, there were two fires in the condo, and he was forced to find a new home for himself, his staff, and his brothers. He intentionally stayed away from Rolf and Stefan, thinking that would keep them safe.

He was wrong.

He tried to gather support from his clan, to counter the vicious and oftentimes untrue propaganda the rebels spread, but the harm had been done. Support for the rebels was growing, for the reigning monarch failing. Shadow called a final clan meeting and faced his opponents head-on in a debate. Even though he presented himself and his side well, he saw his people had turned their backs on him. On the old laws. They wanted change. They wanted what the rebels promised.

If only they could remember the last time this had hap-

pened! He wasn’t old enough to recall firsthand, but he’d read about it. Every child attending their schools read about it.

About the bloodshed and turmoil their people endured. The near extinction.

Yet, they’d made him powerless to stop history from repeating itself.

When Stefan barely escaped with his life after his new home was burned down mere minutes before sunrise, Shadow was forced to consider the only option that remained to him. One that, despite his prior lack of enthusiasm for his position as king, he hadn’t ever wanted to seriously consider.

He cared for his people. Truly cared. The decision to abdicate didn’t come without a lot of struggle and pain. Guilt. Re-morse.

Walk away and protect his family? Or remain on and try to protect his clan?

Most times, he operated under the belief that it was always 220 / Tawny Taylor

best to serve the masses before himself and his family. But in this case it wasn’t so simple. The masses wanted what they wanted. And it was clear they’d get it, whether he stood in their way or not. Why make his family suffer any longer?

He told his brothers of his decision. As he expected, they were angry. Frustrated. Yet, much to his surprise, they didn’t lash out at him. They took the news with a solemn shake of their heads.

The night before he would make his abdication official, he decided he needed to do one last thing. He needed to go see Regan.

He needed to talk to her. He wasn’t sure if he’d have the nerve to tell her everything, how much he missed her. How much he loved her. But he knew he had to at least go to her. To make sure she was safe. Happy. That was, if she’d even see him. He knew it was possible she’d moved on with her life, put the few weeks they’d shared behind her. Maybe she wouldn’t want to speak to him?

As he drove to her house that night, he was more nervous than the day of his coronation. It was a cool evening.
