HARPER

Chapter Eighteen

A nger blazed through me as I was shoved against a brick facade. I blasted the brunette with an energy ball, sending her flying against the wall opposite of me.

She smirked, wiping blood from her mouth with the back of her hand.

“Not bad,” she remarked.

“Yeah? Well, you ain’t see nothing yet.”

“Are you serious? You’re going to attack me after what I just did for you?”

“I’m sorry. I’m not following your logic. How exactly did you help me?”

“I just saved your ass. That’s how.”

“You are psychotic.” I raised my hands again, but she threw her hands up in surrender.

“You were drawing too much attention to yourself dressed like that. I provided you with a way to escape. The other demons won’t be able to find you for a while as long as you stay with me.” She gave me a pointed look, and added. “You’re welcome.”

“You want a thank you? What about Wyatt?”

“Who’s Wyatt?”

“The guy you left back there when you abducted me.”

“You mean the wolf?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, sorry,”—she chuckled—“they’re usually bad news down here. I thought I was doing you a favor by ditching him.”

“No, he’s with me.”

“Huh, okay,”—she pushed off the wall and approached me—“six-two, dark blond hair, and who could forget those eyes?” She snapped her fingers.

Wyatt appeared before us and when he fixed his gaze on the lady who took me, he growled. “You.”

“Whoa, back off. You might have noticed that this place amplifies aggression,” she commented, dodging his advance. “This is exactly why I left him the first time. A little help here. I don’t want to hurt him, but I will if I have to.”

“Wyatt, stop.”

“What? She took you.”

“To help me evidently. Although I’m not so sure. If anything you called more attention to us by instigating that scene back there.”

“Well, I couldn’t exactly say, ‘hey, you two, standing out like outsiders. Come with me if you don’t want to be killed’.”

“Oh, please, you could have alerted us in a less dramatic way.”

“Not the way I see it. Let’s go before they find us.” She latched onto my wrist, pulling me down a set of steps.

My vision blurred and I saw through Nivea’s eyes again. “Hurry, Soraya, before they close the portal.”

I wrenched my hands away from her and fell into Wyatt.

“Do you want to get killed?” she asked impatiently. “I’m trying to help you.”

“Help me? I don’t know you.”

“This really isn’t the best place to converse.” She leveled her gaze at me, then proceeded down the steps. “Fine. Makes no difference to me, if you want to die. Stay there.”

“What are you doing here, Soraya?”

She faltered almost missing a step. “How do you know that name?”

Mr. Jacobs did everything he could to help Nivea and she seemed desperate to protect Soraya by the tone of her voice in my vision and how she felt for that matter. “That is your name. Right?”

“No, it’s Cora.”

“The hell it is. You reacted to the name Soraya.”

“Do you know what they would do if they knew an oracle was in their midst?”

“I never—”

“You didn’t have to…I can sense what you are, too.
