“When was the last time you saw him?”

“A few hours before he went missing.”

Tre’s mouth drops, “Are you serious?”

“I swear he was fine. All he wanted was to go for a dip in the water. That night I took him out, we drank, and he went swimming.”

“Are you trying to look like a perve?”

“What! No!”

“Because I guarantee you others are going to see it that way. A middle-aged man hanging with teens – in the middle of the night. Now their missing,” Tre claps her hand together, “Wake up, Jacob.”

“It’s been a hard season. I needed the money.”

Finkle lays the beer on the coffee table. Tre walks around in a small circle, racking her mind. She knows she has to do the right thing and bring him in for more questioning, but it's so hard. Even though they don't have a relationship or the bond they once had, he's still her brother. And she knows Marshall Spence will rake him over the coals and enjoy watching his flesh split before the elders get him. She walks over and drops down beside him. For a few moments, no one looks at or speaks to each other as the clock on the wall ticks.

“Did anyone see you with Colby?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yep.”

“Fuck me.”

Tre returns to silence and takes the beer bottle from the coffee table. She sips the drink. Finkle takes a sip after she hands it to him.

"Okay. You keep as low a profile as possible, and I mean low. No more trips to the mainland and no more parties. Got it? "

"I've got a job to do, Tre."

“Give some more responsibility to Isaiah, He’ll love it.”

“I would, but he hasn’t been here in a few days.”

“Where is he?”

“You’re asking the wrong person.”

Tre gets up as she says, “Figure it out. He couldn’t have gone far.”

“And what are you going to do?”

“Figure out how to keep your name out of this.”

“You’d do that for me?”

“No. I’m doing it for mom. Just like you did.”

Finkle leans up and says, “If you hear anything about Isaiah, you’ll let me know, right?”

“I will. If you have the–desire to go back out and play– please don’t, and remember…”

“They’re always watching.”

“Who?”

“Never mind. I will.”

“How did you make it out there in the water in the dark? I thought you hated the dark.”

“I do. It was always light out there. With the lanterns and all.”

“And all…yeah.”

Tre leaves, but not before she swipes a bottle of scotch off the small square table hidden in the corner of Finkle’s houseboat. Finkle slouches back in his couch and finishes the beer with a loud burp..

“That’s my baby sister.”
