“You know how people talk about having their Come to Jesus moment?” Emmett had said. “Well, seeing you … I guess that was mine.”

The words hung in the air between the two men in the GUEST HOLDING AREA, got tangled in the cobwebs and stuck there for all to see and examine. Whether he liked to admit it or not, Lance understood that throughout his life he had essentially played the role of savior for several people, in several towns, all with different problems. The word savior could mean different things to different people, could carry great weight or be so light that a small gust of wind could send it sailing away, forgotten as quickly as it had been formed. It wasn’t a title Lance would ever give himself; he was only a young man who had tried to do good for people, tried to fight back against the demons that plagued the earth—both metaphorically and literally.

But whatever he was about to hear told from Emmett Emmanuel Dean’s lips would be something different, something beyond anything Lance had ever experienced. Because with all those other people Lance had helped, his time of saving, in all its many forms, had only come after he’d arrived, after he’d met them and heard their stories and done what he could to set things right.

Lance nodded, just once. “Tell me.”

Emmett uncrossed and crossed his arms, the ropy muscle of his forearms making the faded tattoos wiggle like serpents. “I will,” he said, “but first I want to ask you a question, if that’s alright.”

“Sure,” Lance said, smiling. “Anything. That’s what friends do, right, Ed?”

Emmett smiled, but it was weak, almost pained. “That’s right.” He cleared his throat. “Earlier, you talked about your purpose. Said something about how you were a puppet for the Universe, how your whole life had been sort of guided to this moment.”

“Correct.”

“When did you know?” Emmett asked. “When, with all your powers, did you realize that you were being driven toward something big, something important? And when you realized it, did it change you at all? Did it change your life?”

For such a big question, Lance was surprised at how easily the answer came to him. “I think I’ve always known, at least on some level,” he said. “When I was younger, I think I tried to ignore it, tried to push away the potential grand scope of what I was and what I could do, but it was always there. Just this nagging sense that, whatever
