Chapter Twenty-four

Brad quickly hit his blinker easing the car into Bolsa Chica State Beach. He jerked the Mustang to a stop in the parking lot then took off running down the beach. Sabrina watched him go, hurting for the boy she loved. His anguish was genuine. She shared his agony but the confirmation of peace in her soul the night before had felt so reassuring. Hot tears burned her eyes as she waged against conflicting emotions.

She climbed out of the hot car. Her mouth was dry and she felt queasy. She leaned against the door. Brian’s portrait stared at her from the backseat. She and Haskel had indeed been successful in capturing angels, as he phrased it. She studied his brilliant face peering from behind the glass. She remembered his soothing words to her so long ago.

“...This is going to be the hardest time in your whole life Sabrina. I’m sorry. You’ll just have to face it, but I promise that you have the strength to make it. Dad and I will be closer by than you know.”

“Promise!”

“I promise. You’d be surprised. I’ve always been near.” The words danced in yesterday’s script, fresh and alive, and with a renewed urgency.

She could see Brad’s distant form, growing smaller and smaller as he pounded down the beach.

Sabrina wandered on the sand, making her way near the water. She shuffled along in her flip-flops, letting the waves wash her feet. She gathered pretty shells and interesting bits as she walked. Occasionally tears would fall from her cheeks but the hungry, swirling ocean waters quickly lapped them up.

Sabrina’s phone jangled. “Hello?”

“Sabrina?”

“Hi Vidalia. How are you? I didn’t want to wake you up this morning...you had kind of a late night.”

“Can you believe it, Kid? Can you really believe this has happened? I never dreamed in a million that my trip to California would bring me face to face with Phillip. You and Brad’s frolicking romance led me towards my future I think.”

“Maybe that was the purpose of it all then.”

“What’s wrong, Honey?”

“Last night we kind of ended things. It felt like our zing transferred to you and Phillip. I felt so peaceful that I settled in and slept, really slept. I’ve had another amazing day. Haskel helped me draw Brian, Vidalia! Can you believe it? I’m going to give it to Mom as a delayed bridal gift. But this afternoon all of our steeled-up resolves seem to be waning some. Brad’s really having a hard time right now. He was even babbling about us running away together. I told him not to be ridiculous because there’s no way I’m getting married while I’m still in high school! That’s just plain dumb! He just jerked the car off the highway and took off running down the beach. I’m not chasing him because I figured he needed to think, yell, be alone, or whatever.”

“I’ve been fasting for you two kids. I broke my fast yesterday with that hamburger down at the harbor. It sends shivers down my spine to know that you felt peaceful about things last night.
