Magic Innovation

Joe intentionally stayed quiet as the team slowly began to chat.

“You could be right,” Mum said, “but I haven’t felt this good . . . ever. So I’m willing to keep trying if you all are.”

“I need to keep working and get used to these boots. I’m in,” Z said.

“I’m with the zombie!” Sheets said, mask now nowhere to be found.

“Well, then,” Wolfy said, “I suppose we have work to do. Does anyone have any ideas?”

Joe watched them start to truly own their decisions, and he wanted to help. “How about we all split up and do our scaring thing, and meet back here in an hour to see where we stand? What do you think?”

Heads nodded and everyone spread out. One by one they selected clouds, went through, and scared the heck out of the little kids on the other side. Wolfy’s transformations became faster and faster. Sheets was nearly blinding the children with his amazing lights. Mum actually chose to walk into a room with two sleeping kids and her shriek terrified them both! Z’s jaw trick evolved too. At one point he totally removed it and threw it at a child!

An hour later they gathered to compare notes. Their growth, in terms of their talent and physical size, was quite evident. They were really making progress.

“So that’s fifty-one scares in all. Good work, to say the least,” Joe offered. “Next steps? What do you all think?” Joe again intentionally remained quiet.

“With only a few minutes left, one hundred just isn’t possible,” Sheets admitted.

“Maybe, but a few hours ago we didn’t think getting one scare seemed possible,” Mum replied.

“But I like that we’re all trying different things,” Z said.

“I was thinking the exact same thing!” Joe replied. “When I was talking to the witch, she seemed to understand that all scares aren’t created equal.”

“What do you mean?” Wolfy asked.

“I mean, if we can produce a small number of truly enormous scares, maybe they will sort of count for more,” Joe said. “If we can produce something that blows their mind, maybe they won’t care that we didn’t reach some arbitrary quota. Maybe they’ll realize that what really matters is quality.”

“But how?” Mum asked.

“I have an idea I might try,” Wolfy said.

“I think I do too,” Sheets added.

“I bet they’re good ideas, and you know what?” Joe said. “I think we should try some of them together, at the same time.”

“Wait. What?” Sheets said.

“Wolfy gave me the idea earlier. She said something about wishing we could go through together. Why can’t we?” Joe said.

“That’s never been done, has it?” Wolfy asked.

“I’ve never heard of it,” Mum said.

“Me either,” Sheets added.

Z looked a little giddy. “But it sounds fun, don’t it?”

“Let’s work out a possible plan,” Joe said and motioned for everyone to gather around.

When they were done, Sheets looked around and found just the right cloud. “Here. This one!”

Sheets, Wolfy, and Joe locked arms and went through together. This was something that had never been tried before in Monster Land.
