CHAPTER 28
STINKBOMB!
Azing, then a loud bang burst through the air and into my ears. At first, I thought it was lightning, then I realized with horror it came from the fire pit.
I fell back from my tree stump in surprise at the sudden blast of light and smoke boiling out of the belly of the fire.
âWhat theââ
I stopped in mid sentence as Wild Bill tried to yell over the loud popping and snapping. âEverybody back!â
âAaah! Look out! A stink bomb!â yelped Brick, plugging his nose.
Thatâs about the time the stink hit me in the face. A smell like rotten eggs and skunk spray rushed up my nose, making my eyes water horribly.
We all tried to beat a path to the picnic table, coughing and hacking from the poisoned air. I couldnât tell if my eyes spilled tears from the smoke or from the fumes.
Baby Face shrieked. âItâs those girls. I know it!â He pointed his fist in the air and held his blanket over his nose.
I thought I heard muffled squeals of laughter in the direction of the tent as the girls ran away through the woods.
I remembered my âsave the dayâ plan and went into action. âIncoming!â I declared loudly like a soldier in battle. âYou guys get down. Iâm goinâ after âem!â
I figured if the girlâs attacked the camp, I was going to charge after them and capture the big one, bring her back to camp as my prisoner, and turn her over to Wild Bill. Heâd take her back to the girlâs camp and sheâd get sent home early. Iâd be congratulated and finally be one of the guys.
I whirled around to take out after the girlsâonly one problem. I forgot to think about the fact that it was dark, I had no glasses or flashlight, and smoke filled the immediate area. So, not only couldnât I see, but the stink overpowered me and my stomach churned like bubbling pea soup. The closest object that could possibly trip me, did. Whatever it was, I didnât see it.
One second later, it was over. I was a hero flat on his face in the dirt. So much for my victorious triumph over smart alec girls who probably used a sling shot, nailing our camp with a firecracker and a stink bomb at the same time.
Wild Bill, breathing through a handkerchief, walked over and lifted me up by my waistband and set me up straight, then pointed me toward the picnic table. I felt like one of those bugs that keep burning themselves against a hot lantern in a useless effort to get to the light. I donât know why I kept trying to impress people. It wasnât working.
We all held our noses and backed away from the table trying to get to fresh air. After a few minutes the smoke began to clear and the smell slowly dissolved into the night sky.
I started to think it was time to keep to myself and stop trying to be one of the guys.
