The stars twinkle in the still, clear night. Where is a snowsquall to block my view of the toughest moment of my life? The full moon shines on Vera as she limps into the campsite. I long to reach out to her and carry her back to a hideout. Her pink face pulls into a grimace of pain. The herbs holding her pain have worn off, so she carries the agony. She grunts with each foot placement as if she has walked the entire way from the ground popper…or her pain has escalated while I fought with my kin. No wonder she walked away without a goodbye.

I’m not worthy of her if I neglect her suffering to squabble with another male. A male of worth has his female’s well-being in the back of his mind at all times. Sergei saw her bravery and replaced her broken walking branch. I should have given her one instead of her making one, snapping it while saving me, and then accepting a replacement from a rival male. Vera is so damn independent I lose sight of her delicate body.

A body meant to be cherished. The tundra doesn’t allow a male to cherish his mate…not in the way Vera deserves. As my shoulders droop, my intuition feeds me the truth. Vera needs more than I can provide—dushevnayasvyaz or not. If I love her as much as I think I do, I should be happy when she finds what she needs. She will find a dushevnayasvyaz amongst her kind. Someone like her won’t be alone for long. I should feel glad. Instead, my guts churn like I’ve eaten a fistful of rotten berries.

I’m the closest to the encampment in case something goes wrong. The others would be happy to slaughter the hairless ones but wait for my signal as Denis’s next of kin. Duty says to wait so he is returned in one piece, but my heart is split. Despite her rejection of my silent offer, I will carry her away if this turns into a bloodbath. Then I will spend the rest of my life proving I know how to love her.

Four wooden frames sit a foot off the ground with strange, clear skins stretched over them. Next to them is a fire pit and a structure big enough to be called a yurt. Three smaller tent structures nestle in the bigger one’s shadow, like cubs behind their mother. A machine—the ‘jeneerater’ I hope—whirls next to the structure closest to my hiding place to the east. I’m in the perfect place to sneak into Denis’s most likely resting place.

“Who’s on watch?” Vera’s voice is strong and angry. I bet her echo travels back to her mother in her foreign land. She bobs her head with enough force to shake her hair like evil tentacles. “How can I sneak up on this unkempt dig? What if I were a pack of wolves? You would be ripped to shreds and your unsecured site trashed! Don’t you value
