Vic was in one of the more awkward situations of his professional life. It felt bizarre, but also wonderful. Worth started in on Carliss almost straight away.

“Bill, my office has expended quite a few billable hours on this since you contacted us. If you think we’re a charity of some kind I can assure you we’re not, I—”

“Deborah, it’s alright, you can calm down,” said Bill. “You’ll get remunerated for your efforts so far, probably out of the proceeds of Mister Lovecraft’s future actions. But let’s make something clear on my end—I never authorized you to run around doing all the research you did. You smelt a significant bonanza, and you acted, and I gotta give you credit, it was very valuable; great instincts.”

“Well, yes, but I am very concerned about Lovecraft’s attitude to my company and his strange affinity for Mister Chandra. What’s being said down there?”

Vic stood up. “Look, Bill, Ms. Worth, I should let you have privacy... ”

“Vic, that would be good. But before you go, listen, both of you,” said Bill. This Lovecraft is a cranky old guy who distrusts lawyers. Not my typical client profile, and probably not a kind you deal with at all, Deborah. Now, get over it.”

Worth actually blinked. Her mouth opened but Bill plowed on.

“Vic’s done what we should have done, not assumed what the client wants. Now he thinks we’re snakey. Fine. He likes Vic, he’s worth a small fortune. Let’s just discuss how we’ll move forward most efficiently with that, but really, that’s a huge win, he’s committed to us via Vic. Vic, leave the details to us, and go and see that our aged friend is OK in a strange town. Take him to his hotel, get him lunch or something.”
