CONCLUSION

The dreams and visions of warriors were as important as the deeds they accomplished. The texts they produced on portable art, on trees and cliff faces, and even on their own frame houses illustrate the types of spiritual encounters they experienced. The often static images of vision and dream experiences are easily read by contemporary Crow people, as dreams and visions continue to be a vital, valued, and integral part of spirituality.

The defining of these panels as vision texts derives as much from their location on the land as from their content. Since spiritual quests were (and continue to be) undertaken at unique geologic features, especially at remote mountaintops and high points in the landscape, contemporary Crow people associate rock art at these places with fasting. This is corroborated by the example of the panel at the Bethune Fasting Site. The fact that a natural feature became categorized as a recognizable religious symbol was because it is located within a locale associated with spiritual retreat. In addition, the three sacred sites, a cliff face approachable from a trail and the other two in overhangs, were not identified as vision images.
