For a moment, Crimson and Wesley hung there, between the sky and the ground, and Crimson could see everything—her farm and others dotted in the distance, even the deep dark woods and Giant Hill.

Wesley looked, too, gripping Crimson tightly.

“Wow,” he whispered. “I think I saw Giant Hill blink.”

That was impossible . . . or was it?

But they couldn’t hang there watching forever. Carefully, Crimson wiggled a single strand from the bunch of straw. It slipped away. They bobbed down just a bit. She let go of another. Then another.

Until they started to drift slowly down . . .

down . . .

down.

At last, they landed with a soft thud in the field. Mauve raced over to them.

Shakily, Crimson stood up, letting go of the broom straw. It disappeared into the sky, seemingly happy to be free.

“Are you okay?” asked Mauve.

“I’m fine,” said Crimson.

“I . . . I’m okay, too,” breathed Wesley. But he stayed seated on the ground. “I’m sorry I cut so much,” he said to Crimson.

“No! It’s my fault!” said Crimson. “I should have warned you. I didn’t expect that wind.”

“Do you think a storm is coming?” said Mauve. “We did pass storm clouds on our way here.”

“Maybe,” said Crimson. But she hadn’t seen any storm clouds—not when she was up high and not now, either. It didn’t make sense.

Nothing was going according to plan.

No rotten apples. No broom straw. And now . . .

“The last thing on my list is croaking the frogs, unless you’d rather head back to the house?” Crimson asked in a small voice.

“It’s okay,” said Wesley, standing up at last. But he didn’t look okay.

“I want to croak a frog,” said Mauve.

Wesley nodded in agreement.

“Really?” Crimson perked up. Frogs didn’t fly. They only hopped.

Surely, this time nothing would go wrong.
