Later in the afternoon Billy leaves Ned outside the youth centre — the kid is giving his fourth rendition of the perfect wave to Tom and the boys — and just makes the 5.12 train from Central. At Stanmore he steps off the third carriage right at the steps down to the underpass. When the miniature poodle snaps at the gate on Percival Road he isn’t startled anymore, he just goes on his way past the park with the pale yellow roses and the old bloke sitting on a beanbag on his porch smiling at passers-by. It isn’t a neighbourhood where you see a lot of people out front of their houses. They used to do it more, Billy figures, and the old bloke can’t see any reason to change his ways and sit all alone out back.

When he turns into Rita’s street he stops in his tracks. Outside the front door is a man. He faces the street, his arms folded. He is waiting.

In spite of the distance, Billy recognises him instantly, and in spite of their friendship, some part of him doubts if there is room in this day for Jason.
