Ethan and Beth were crouched under the bedroom window. Ethan had his hand placed on Beth’s shoulder. ‘I’ll go and take a look. Wait here.’

‘No, don’t leave me.’

‘Beth, there’s no one there. You’re seeing things. It’s an old house. You know, I thought I heard someone downstairs yesterday. Remember when you all went out? Our minds play tricks. This place is creepy. We’re going to hear shit all the time. I’ll be back before you know it.’

Beth faced her brother. ‘What about the stories? What people are saying about this place? The bodies?’

‘Oh, Beth. People love a story. They’re probably all having a good laugh at us.’ He made his way out of the bedroom and leant over the balcony. ‘Hello? Is anyone down there?’ He turned to Beth. ‘See? No one there.’ He slammed the bedroom door shut.

'That's it? That's you checking if the house is empty?'

'What do you suggest?'

Beth took a deep breath. 'We can't stay up here all day. Go and check.'

'What? Why should I go?'

'Because you're the man. Now go.'

Ethan looked hassled. 'Beth, there's no one downstairs.'

'You won't know until you check. I'll wait here.'

Ethan moved slowly out to the hallway, closing the bedroom door behind him.

Beth heard his footsteps as he walked down the stairs, moving one slow step at a time. Eventually, the noise faded.
