Annalise set her phone on her bedside table and hooked up the charger. Ten minutes wasn’t a lot of time, but it was enough to get ten or twenty percent more on her battery. Brishen was an Apple junkie, so she couldn’t rely on him to have a compatible micro USB charger for her to use in the event of an emergency.

As she rifled through her drawers looking for something clean, the light from outside dimmed. All the heat sucked out of the room, and the familiar presence of the creature crept up on her from behind.

Hello, Ga’al.

You made up with your friends I see.

Annalise shivered. His voice, like cracked timber and rusted hinges, had grown louder since it last assaulted her thoughts.

Only one of them. And she’s my partner, not my friend. Honestly, I’m finding it harder to trust you every day.

His chuckle filled her thoughts. Lines of darkness wrapped around her. One shadow tentacle lifted a long, thick wool dress from her drawers. One of Dasha’s favorites.

Thank you?

My pleasure. I don’t see why you wouldn’t trust me. It seems your friends are the dishonest ones.

She flinched. At least Lokni is. She took the dress from where it hung and slipped it on. It fit perfectly, and, she had to admit, it was as warm as it looked. Can I ask you something?

You just did.

Ha ha. Since when do you have a sense of humor?

I get the feeling that isn’t your question.

You’re starting to sound like Dasha.

More laughter.

In all seriousness, I had this weird vision last night. Something called an EMP going off above Seattle. We got hit here in Qualicum, and everything electric stopped working all at once. I know Brishen gets these sometimes, and they’re usually true. But since when do I have that power?

For someone who doesn’t trust me, you sure seem comfortable asking important questions.

Call it a chance to prove your honesty.

All right. Close your eyes.

She sat on her bed and shut her eyes. Her skin prickled with sensation. Flashes of heat tickled her arms and legs, melding with unspeakable cold. Her mind expanded.

Suddenly, she rose above the earth. Thousands of strings of light whirled around her. The dark shapes surrounding her wove and bobbed between them, tugging on some and squeezing between others.

They floated above an island, then descended as quickly as thought to the ground. Sudden wet heat left her skin damp with sweat and condensation. Huts and small houses dotted the tiny landscape. The air was thick with salt seaweed. Waves lapped against the shores of beaches with sand as white as bone.

Dark skinned people, darker than she or her mother, flitted between the huts.

They can’t see you.

Annalise nodded. Why am I here?

This was almost your home. Centuries before you were a thought in your father’s brain, your ancestors made their home here.

Puerto Rico.

They called it Borikén.

Annalise whistled. The tendrils pulled her into one of the house structures, where a woman lay with her legs splayed and an older woman whispered in a language she could hardly understand.
