Chapter Six
The drive to Des Moines was taking fucking forever, and that was without the leftover pounding in his head from the night before. He wasn’t hungover, not exactly, but certainly not at the top of his game. Good thing all he had to do was get to the airport, then take the short flight back to Denver. Jaime glanced at the dashboard clock. Give him six, maybe seven hours and he’d be home.
The sameness of the scenery gave him nothing to look at, and even the roadside billboards were boring. All he had to keep him company were old dance mixes on his iPod and his thoughts. Neither one was particularly interesting at the moment. Not when Trevor filled his thoughts, how he should have fought harder to have Trevor come back to Denver with him or something, and the dance mixes had been played a thousand times before at Flux. Normally the familiar music soothed him, allowed his mind to wander profitable paths. Not today.
He cursed the awkward good-bye at the hotel. Trevor had stayed in his room until morning, then dressed in a pair of sweats and a faded T-shirt he’d stuck in his bag along with a battered pair of sneakers. A quick kiss and some words that both of them probably wished had come easier. Then it was over. Almost as quick and neat as any one-night stand he’d had.
Except for the “I—” Trevor had stammered when he’d stopped in the doorway. He’d pressed his lips together and looked like he wanted to say something more. Then he didn’t. He simply turned and closed the door behind him.
Jaime had stared at that closed door, ever mindful of his long drive and the flight he had to make, and wanted to scream and yell and pound on it until Trevor returned. He knew what words hovered on Trevor’s lips, because they were on his too. Except he’d been too chicken to even try and say anything. At least Trevor had tried.
Which was a lot more than he’d done a couple of years ago. Maybe he should have—crap, no. Running this shit around in his mind didn’t get him anywhere. He slowed down for an older truck with an elderly couple inside. Passing, he noted the mile marker. He’d make his plane. He should be happy. He was going back to Denver, his club, and all the men he could ever want to meet. Just because he was leaving one farm boy behind didn’t mean his heart was breaking, except it was.
* * * *
Trevor stared in the mirror and patted the layer of foundation on his face like a robot. Tonight his heart wasn’t in it, wasn’t in ShyAnne and what she represented. Instead, he was thinking about the time, how far Jaime had driven to Des Moines, and if his flight had taken off yet. Thinking about his lover in the plane flying back to Denver sent a stab of longing through him. He should have gone, said “gotta go” to Jake and gotten his ass on the plane next to Jaime.
