The practice of burning incense has always accompanied Chinese who travel to trade, work, and sometimes settle abroad. Incense sticks ship with them and incense factories spring up in new locales, and the ash from home-village incense urns is transported to seed new temples in new places, all of which testifies to the obvious point that the diasporic movement of Chinese people has been mirrored by a diasporic spread of gods, ghosts, and cults. The way incense smoke occupies the space between the substantial and insubstantial evokes for me the migrant or sojourner experience of being between places or of experiencing a sense of being in two places at once. This state of translocality (Appadurai 1996: 192), wherein people occupy a space which is a conflation of home and away, never quite here or there, is common to an increasing fraction of the world’s population.
