First Timeline Checkpoint

The value of the reappointment or tenure progress review is that it provides faculty members with guidance about any corrective actions that they need to take before the tenure review. It is imperative for the faculty member to pay close attention to this feedback and work with his or her chair and/or mentors to set specific goals to guide the remainder of the tenure process. In my own experience as a faculty member at the reappointment stage, I was told that although my chair believed that if I completed the research agenda I had created I would earn tenure, the provost had some doubt that I could actually do it. I used this doubt as an incentive to prove her wrong. Even though the criteria for tenure may not always be clear and specific, seeking feedback from appropriate sources gives you a more complete picture of what you need to do.

As mentioned previously, universities vary in relation to reviews before tenure. This is one of the first things you need to learn on taking a position. It might be helpful for you to create a map of all of the steps you must take to achieve tenure, with specific dates for the review processes. The first evaluation may take place in your third year, but what might not be clear at first is that all of your documentation is submitted at the beginning of your third year and really only covers what you have accomplished in your first 2 years. That is why this review is about your promise or potential as a counselor educator. Think about it: You take a new position and are given several new course preparations for the fall. You have moved to a new location, found a place to live, and settled your family into new routines. Often you are just one or two lessons ahead of your students. So getting focused on writing up your dissertation for publication might not be the first thing on your list. Yet you need to be thinking about how you will begin your agendas in teaching, research, and service. Each of these areas is discussed in more detail in the following sections.
