4) FOCUS ON DEVELOPING HEALTHY COPING BEHAVIORS
People who have trouble with emotional regulation have a sense that they are better at coping with stress when they do not focus on what is happening in their body and mind. They feel the need to distract themselves by feeding their attention with strong impulses, and cutting, burning, picking, or hitting oneâs own flesh can certainly fill that role. We need to match the replacement behaviors to suit the primary function(s) that the self-injury behavior is playing.
People who self-injure may experience a variety of different emotions â including anger and frustration, sadness, loneliness, and hurt â and sometimes the absence of emotion, which can also be distressing. After building awareness and increasing safety, clientsâ emotions surface powerfully, which is not uncommon when exploring past traumatic experiences. For clients, the next step is being able to manage and modulate the emerging intense feeling states appropriately. We can normalize this process and help clients to understand the flow of emotion and how to both tolerate the discomfort and build emotion-regulation strategies. At this stage of treatment, clients feel increased internal and external resources and a greater capacity for building safety into their lives.
