Chapter Seventeen

I settled back down in the lounger.

"Alright, Cosmo, what do you want to talk about today?"

"Your near abduction of course, and my inability to prevent it."

"It wasn't your fault, she had you suppressed and cut off and all that, right?"

"True, but nevertheless one of my core directives is to prevent organics from coming to harm, and I failed in that duty."

"Don't beat yourself up. We all make 5 million dollar mistakes," I chuckled. "That's a joke, don't beat yourself up, really."

Cosmo sighed.

"I suppose," I said, sipping the whiskey and enjoying the flavorful burn, "you will want to do something about this to prevent it from happening again?"

"Indeed, Noah, I have several security proposals--"

I held up a hand.

"Just give me the summary. I'm exhausted and don't have the brainpower for all the details tonight."

"Very well," Cosmo said, "I have several ideas to strengthen my security capabilities and also increase my processing power for threat detection. It is likely that the bounty hunters will be back, and sooner than you think. But in addition to all of those things I would suggest you have me train you in self defense, and possibly weapons. As it is now you are helpless in a fight, and that will only endanger you and the staff."

"I'll agree with your last point," I said, "but I'm not going to spend my time hiding from threats in my private office, or spend my days in my quarters. I'm going to be out in the thick of it, serving drinks, delivering food, mixing drinks and talking to customers. And don't say you're going to get me a bodyguard, I won't hear of it. I don't want anything to separate me from the rest of the staff."

Cosmo sighed again.

"As you wish."

"Can you scan every alien as they arrive and determine if they're a bounty hunter?"

"Not with acceptable accuracy, biomarkers can be altered, credentials can be faked, histories changed."

"What's acceptable accuracy for you?"

"99.9^15th repeating percent."

"I see. I might be able to live with a simple 99.999 percent."

"Indeed you may not; that tiny fraction of a fraction may be what kills you."

"We're all going to die, Cosmo. And while I have no wish to, I can't avoid it forever. What about attacking this problem from the other end; what about getting the bounty lifted, or changed to point at Stormrider?"

"That is an excellent idea, but one that is quite outside our skills. The Bounty Guild prides itself on it's security, and on sticking with a job until it is complete, or they are incapacitated or dead. This bounty on you has not yet been accepted, or completed, so they won't lift it."

"But is there a way to hack in and change the records?"

"I have no doubt there is, but you will need a computer expert, and one better than me. I have contacts with other AIs who may know, but I continue to be doubtful that that path is the correct one; the one most likely to yield results."
