After putting on her spare apron, I began to help make dinner, eating the ingredients along the way.

“By the way,” Charlotte added, “I ran into Tanya and Princess a couple of weeks ago.”

When hearing the second name, I grinned. Tanya and Princess were fellow pilots or ours when I was still in the Airforce.

“Poor Princess. Her mother just had to go and name her that.”

“I know. I’m sure that she meant well, but what could she be thinking? That must have been hell for Princess when she was training at the Academy.”

“It was fine, at first,” I said, “because she never told us her real name, originally. She introduced herself as Pres, and we all just went along with it. Then, when all training was done and we all graduated, that’s when we learned what Pres was short for. When she got her first jet, someone scribbled her real name on the side of it. She was super angry. How is she doing?”

“She’s on leave right now, but with the war in Europe, soon she and Tanya will be going to be deployed to a base… out in Sweden.”

Charlotte’s pause was understandable, clearly remembering my time when I was deployed in that part of Europe. For a second, I flinched, recalling the bad experience I had there. But I wiped away the horror and focused on anything else but myself.

“They’ll like it there. Sweden is pretty, and if they get time off, it’s got some pretty landscape.”

“I was stationed there once too, so I told them that it would be great. They said that they miss you.”

“They didn’t like me in my first few months in their unit,” I said, “at first, I thought that it was because I was the new kid on the block, but since I knew them before, from the Academy, I didn’t see why. So, I was happy when they fessed up.”

“They were jealous of you.”

I looked at her, shocked.

“What?” I gasped.

“You were the better pilot and you showed them up a little. You didn’t mean to, I know, but that’s the way it is. You were the better pilot, and they had a hard time accepting that. But when they did, they got over it. That’s what they told me.”

I tried to speak, but I kept losing my words. Finally, I found them.

“That’s why they were mean to me?” I asked, grinding my teeth. “Jealousy! That emotion is so annoying. It creates so many bullies.”

“I know. They do feel bad. They really do.”

“I just wish they got over it quicker. I suffered a lot of ‘new kid’ pranks because of them. Once we became friends, it was nice. We were quick to throw off our fatigues, throw on a dress, and flaunt our femininity all over town. I just wish that we could have been doing that sooner. Whoever thought that being a soldier would make us more in touch with our feminine side, and not the opposite? That’s irony for you.”

“Well, they appreciate you now.
