CHAPTER 9

Amsterdam, 14 ºC

Dr. Zimmer had hardly touched food. His sandwich was still there and also most of the fries. He seemed uncomfortable. In the background, Fascination by Alphabeat contrasted with the tone of the encounter.

«Forgive me if I couldn’t afford to offer you a more dignified meal, but in these days law enforcement does not have a large budget» Inspector Van Der Meer said.

«No, it’s fine. It's just that I don’t eat very often at McDonald's... But I thank you for the lunch invitation anyway. Tell me, how can I help you?»

«I need to know if Sarah, or maybe even you, have been having trouble lately, I don’t know, something like a quarrel with someone, pressures of various kinds, threats, unusual comments or public attacks...»

«In fact, I must confess you that I'm apprehensive. I know it will seem absurd, given the situation, but I’m worrying about the safety of Sarah...»

Hans thought about it a bit, then asked for explanations. His double cheeseburger was just a vague memory and soon he would have finished the fries, even if they were cold and flaccid.

«You see, the fact is that we continue to receive disturbing messages from someone who manifests a particular hatred for Sarah ...»

«Do you already know who it is?»

«No, but I personally would have an idea ...»

«And who would it be?" Hans asked curiously.

«You see, Inspector, there's only one person who has so obviously and constantly attacked Sarah: his name is Malik-al-Fazan.»

«Who? That Arab billionaire that is negotiating for the Arsenal team?»

«I'm not interested in football, but I think he is the same person.»

Van Der Meer was seized by a sudden wave of thoughts and hypotheses, but he didn’t know which to choose. So he did what he did best: questions.

«Do you have any evidence that leads back to him?»

«No, but I still keep all those anonymous messages.»

«Great, please let me have them, so I can examine them.»

«But you, Inspector, haven’t told me yet why you wanted to meet me ...»

«I wouldn’t want to alarm you more than necessary, but anyway I have received reports about Sarah too. Soon she will take part at that important conference, here in Amsterdam, and if we don’t move, I fear something unpleasant might happen...»

The doctor gasped. His thin, worn face didn’t do justice to his forty years. All his fears, nightmares of the last days were suddenly realizing. Yet he felt as if he could not react, as if the threads of a puppeteer held him back and prevented him from emerging from that unexpected and surreal situation.

«Dr. Zimmer you don’t have to worry, I will put my men and ...»

«Inspector, the problem is another one.»

«What?»

«He... He will be there too...» and he deliberately left the pending phrase looking into the void.

Hans stirred; he didn’t like people who don’t know how to get to the point. «Him who?»

Zimmer looked at him with the expression of a beaten dog. Then he quietly announced:

«Al-Fazan..»
