CHAPTER SEVEN

MIMI hadn’t had much sleep, but she didn’t plan to hang around the cottage. However, when she saw Marc bent over a filing cabinet, she felt obliged to offer to help. He cast her a quick, narrowed look, muttering he was “catching up on paperwork,” and this was her day off. Indicating the door, he turned back to the files, unmistakably ending their conversation.

That was dandy with her. There had been something in Marc’s eyes last night—rather, early this morning, on the cruiser—something that had tormented her, making her toss and turn for what had been left of the nighttime. She’d thought she’d seen a kiss in his glance, and for one insubordinate second, she’d responded with excitement, even longing!

Maybe it had been the glow of the instrument panel reflecting in his gaze that had caused the odd illusion. She was fortunate she’d caught herself in time, reminding sternly, No! You are not going to let the doc get his country-boy hooks into your heart! The man won’t even take vacations for fear somebody might need him! He’s not right for you, Mimi. Forget about it!

The last thing she needed to do was close her eyes and pucker up like she had last week in his kitchen, only to discover he’d had no intention of kissing her. She’d been lucky he’d dipped his head to whisper in her ear, or he might have seen her bizarre behavior. She had a bad feeling fate wouldn’t give her another break like that, so she needed to keep her wits about her. And she needed to keep her distance from him. The man had a strange way about him that made her go a little batty.

Late that afternoon, Mimi forced thoughts of Marc to a back shelf as she jingled her charm bracelets above little Kyle’s face. They both lay on a blanket under a towering pine. The baby gurgled delightedly, batting at the shiny noisemakers. Susan and Jake had wanted to spend the afternoon in Portland visiting Susan’s old boss, Ed, in the hospital recuperating from corrective back surgery. Susan didn’t believe in nannies, and though there were plenty of household staffers to watch Kyle, Mimi had been quick to volunteer.

She decided she could play with Kyle on the lawn until he fell asleep, then she would pass a pleasant afternoon reading. Of course, Foo Foo had made herself comfortable on the blanket, too, butted up against Mimi’s hip. That was okay. She was getting used to the little mutt’s unbidden company.

A sea breeze wafted over the three of them like a caress. The day was lovely, tranquil and quiet, except for the tinkle of silver charms and the high-pitched cry of sea birds soaring overhead.

Kyle sputtered and babbled with glee as Mimi jingled her bracelets. She laughed at his uncoordinated antics, enjoying the experience immensely. She’d never spent much time around babies, and getting to know Kyle was proving to be a delight.

“Kylie, did you know there’s a brand-new baby
