CHAPTER 15

“How long you been up?” Jaymerius’ voice floated into the closet where Jacari was climbing up and down on ladders putting together his potential game day looks. Despite the rumble in the jungle he set off the other night, she wanted to ensure he looked his best.

It was partially guilt from putting him in the position and wanting to own whatever role she was in. Mother of his child, potential girlfriend, partner? She didn’t know what or how to describe this and unfortunately, that thought woke her up before her designated time.

Jacari, after weeks of not hearing melodies, finally did. She sat in the sitting area using her phone for light as she filled pages upon pages of potential songs, poems about her feelings and written notes of her concern. How she was going to record them professionally, she didn’t know. But she intended on using the JoyBeats app on her laptop to record them and later upload them to her BeatCloud. It’d be something to pass the time while Jaymerius was gone for the next four days and she hoped and prayed something more would blossom from it.

Her body turned to face him slightly. Expecting to answer him quickly, she was put at pause as she observed his adoring glare casted over her. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“You’re glowing,” he stated with a soft gasp.

Jacari smirked and turned away. “It’s the first trimester glow. Soon, the morning sickness will kick in and my cute little frame will be gone and I’ll look like Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. All wrapped in one.”

Jaymerius shook his head as he moved further into the closet with her. “You won’t.”

“I might,” she replied. “My mother said I stretched her so wide and she was so swollen that she refused to have another kid. But then again, my mother lives in the mirror so I get it.”

Jaymerius chuckle was low. “Your parents as crazy as mine?”

Considering the slew of voicemails and texts she hadn’t answered from her mother nor father, she hated to even let him peep into the world she came from. The world that was left in ruins.

“I’ve only gotten a glimpse, I’m sure. But your mother alone takes the cake.”

“You ain’t lying,” Jaymerius droned, forcing them both to release a laugh.

“She’s always been like that?” Jacari questioned. “Always sharp, on the edge, and condescending?”

Jaymerius’ hesitation proved that he wasn’t ready to deep dive into the full capacity of crazy his family held. If anything, he was trying to escape it. “I like that suit. Let me find out you can put some shit together.”

Jacari smiled proudly and bounced her shoulders, taking notice of his change of subject. “I used to dress up a lot and help my dad put his suits together when my mother was running around the world. A good suit styled perfectly always makes people reconsider their opinions of you.”

“That’s what you’re doing? Trying to make people reconsider their opinions of me?”

“That and be a good girlfriend.
