Time dragged forward slowly during that day, and almost nothing interrupted the monotony of the cellar. Once, at midday, their guards brought food, but otherwise the three prisoners sat in empty silence, wrapped in misery. By the dayâs end, as dusk fell once again upon the city, Cordâs nerves and temper were fraying badly. But it was Heleth who erupted to her feet.
âMuch more of this and Iâll go through the walls!â she snarled.
Cord smiled mirthlessly at the concrete walls and the solid door. âI wish you could. But maybe we should try to jump the guards when they bring food next. With Helethâs eyes we might get away in the dark.â
Samella looked doubtful, but Heleth brightened. Then they all froze, at a sudden tap on the cellar door.
âCord!â It was Steleâs voice, in a penetrating whisper.
âStill here,â Cord said sourly.
âSomethingâs happening,â Stele said, sounding anxious. âTuller went away earlier, didnât say where, but when he got back he looked pleased with himselfâlike he does when heâs hurt somebody. And now heâs told us weâre moving, to another part of Limbo.â
âLeaving us here?â Cord asked tensely.
âLooks that way,â Stele said. âNobody knows whatâs going on, and Rontal and Jeko got into trouble trying to find out. But Tullerâs even pulled your guards away. I donât like itâand I wish I could help you.â
âCanât you get us out?â Cord demanded.
âNoâTullerâs got the key,â Stele said. âAnd I have to join the others before he gets suspicious.â He paused. âIâm really sorry. And 1 wish I could have seen that planet.â
The three stared at each other fearfully as Steleâs light footsteps faded away, outside.
âWhat could Tuller be up to?â Heleth wondered.
âThatâs the question,â Samella said. âWhat would make him come back acting pleased with himself?â A small frown creased her brow. âAnd why is he moving the Streeters?â
âBecause something is going to happen here,â Cord said, almost without thinking. âTo us.â
Then his eyes widened at the thought of what those words could mean, and Samella drew her breath in sharply.
âThatâs it!â she said in a rush. âThe CeeDees! Tuller must have got to them, and sold us out!â
Heleth said something vicious under her breath.
âMaybe he did a deal,â Samella went on. âThe CeeDees get us and agree to leave the Streeters alone for a while. Or maybe he got paid.â
Cord glowered as he thought about it. It was the most logical explanation for Tullerâs strange behaviour. It was also wholly sickening. âA good thing Jeko didnât tell Stele all the details about where Lathan will land,â he growled.
âThat doesnât help us,â Heleth said sharply. âHow do we get out of here?â
His temper ablaze, Cord strode to the door and delivered a thunderous kick. But the doorâs solid frame was set firmly in the concrete wall, and it only rattled slightly.
âCould we chip the concrete away around it?â Samella ventured.
âNot without tools,â Cord said shortly. âAnd itâs nearly too dark for anyone but Heleth to see.â
They glanced up, seeing that the light filtering between the planks of the ceiling was nearly gone.
