Chapter Twenty

Amber

The signs for a conservation area start about fifty miles away from its border, and every new update for how close we are brings a pang of longing to my chest.

There was a time not too far in the past when I thought working outdoors, or at least for the outdoors, would be my dream life, and in some ways, I don’t think I’ve ever really let go of the dream.

Nat has said it a few times, “Search for a new career and finally be free of all the hang-ups from your childhood.”

It’s easy for her to say that. She had a place to go—Luna Harbor—and people who support her unconditionally.

Unlike her, my father is still Whitaker Livingstone. I know it’s crappy to say she’s lucky to learn that her fucked-up parents are actually her grandparents. Now, she has a second chance to get to know her real dad and have a family.

I… I lost the one person who gave a shit about me. It didn’t matter that I chose to follow Dad’s path and become a lawyer. She supported me until the end.

But if I change careers, where would I go, what would I do? I can’t just say fuck it all. There has to be a solid plan. I wish I could use my degree to help others—and not just the rich.

“What is it? You need an unscheduled bathroom stop or something?” Hutch asks.

Ugh, he’s never going to let go of my schedule even though he’s thoroughly and gleefully made me abandon it at this point.

“Hmm? No,” I say absently, craning my neck to look at the dense forest on either side of us.

“Then what is it?”

I bite my lip and keep looking out the window. I’m not sure if I want to reveal this to him, but it’s also not like it’s much of a secret. I had majored in Environmental Studies for my undergraduate degree, and it was only my second year in law school that I finally gave in to my dad’s pressure and switched tracks to bloodsucking law.

“Did you know I did an Environmental Studies major once upon a time?” I ask, trying to sound casual.

“I did not know,” he responds in that easygoing way of his. “I figured you’d have been a serious pre-law major the whole way through.”

I smile a little wistfully and lean my head against the softly vibrating window. The landscape blurs around us, and I sigh.

“No, that was later,” I say, not really wanting to explain. Hutch doesn’t push me for details. That’s something he’s good about, I’ve noticed. Minimally nosy and willing to let other people set boundaries on all their personal details. It’s a rare trait.

“My friends and I… all four of us were going to make a difference. Tracy as a teacher, Nathalie as a doctor.” I tap my chin trying to remember what Christina was going to study, but I can’t remember. “And I was going to do something to help humanity. I’m good at arguing and I planned to use that skill to help others.
