Chapter 9: Mobile App Development
The time of the mobile device has come. According to techjury.net, 63% of all internet traffic comes from mobile. Mobile apps also have more engagement rates than desktop. Mobile phone users always touch their phones, close to 1,500 times per day. This means more engagements, more conversations, and more everything when comparing mobile to desktop. We're always on the move, it's the 21st being able to do things on the move, such as surf the internet, make purchases, and more is very important. So if there was ever a time to build an app or learn to build one, this is the time.
Mobile app development involves the creation or development of applications for mobile devices. These devices could be phones, tabs, digital assistants, and other kinds of mobile devices. These applications software come in a lot of times pre-installed in the device, and also you can download them from the mobile app stores, such as Apple Store for iOS and Google Play Store for Android. An app or a mobile application is a program or a software application that has been created to work on a mobile device. Basically, a mobile application is a software or a computer program which has been created for mobile devices.
Virtually everything that's done of phones is carried out with the help of apps, from sending emails to playing music, surfing the web, and more. And these days, there seems to be an app for everything. Your word processors have apps for them, and many more things that you'd think would never need to be apps. In the world of apps today, there are two platforms. Not app making platforms, but two devices platform which are recipients of these apps. They are the Android (by Google) platform by Google and the iOS (by Apple.inc) platform. The Android and iOS platforms are also referred to as operating systems. iOS is exclusive to Apple mobile devices and wearables, while Google allows for its O.S to be used by other smartphone makers, as long as they add Google apps to the devices that they make. Apart from these two, there are other mobile operating systems in the market today. KaiOS, Windows, Samsung, and some unknown names. Altogether these operating systems don't account for up to 1% of the market share. Android has 76.67%, while iOS has a 22.09% market share. These stats are according to statcounter .
History of Mobile Apps
It's almost difficult to imagine a time without apps; you know no Google Play Store and no Apple App Store. Prior to July 2008, the word app didn't exist. It was this year also the App Store was hosted. Some months later, Google also created her Play Store and uploaded it with apps. It was the iPhone in the opinion of many that revolutionized mobile software. The first iPhone has a multi-touch display, a web browser that actually worked, and a digital keyboard. It was all new and exciting, both for those participating and those watching from the sidelines.
