Chapter 11

Noah enjoyed the women’s company. They reminded him of the

nurses he worked with at the medical center—easy-mannered,

happy and laughing, and hard-working.

By the end of the meal they had demolished their food, drank

two beers each, except for Mara who was downing the iced tea

just as quickly, and had all declined dessert.

The waitress brought over four separate checks and Keegan

took Noah’s, saying, “I got it.”

“Aww…” Karen made a silly face at Keegan. “Isn’t that

cute?”

Noah caught Keegan giving Karen a wary glance as he put

his credit card on the table.

“Are you guys going to do more shopping?” Mara asked,

counting out her cash to cover the bill and tip.

“Nope. I’m done for today.” Noah rubbed his face and stifled

a yawn.

“I wouldn’t mind browsing,” Karen said to Mara, “The sales

are fantastic.”

“Okay.” Mara shrugged agreeably.

The waitress returned for the checks and said, “Be right

back.”

Noah handed Keegan his jacket and reached under the table

for the bags. When he did, he ran into Keegan’s leg and gave it a

nice squeeze. To his surprise, Noah got a hand on his thigh and a

quick grope. He turned to look at Keegan and caught his wicked

smile.

Karen made a noise of amusement and leaned her chin on her

palm as she stared at them. “Oh to be a fly on the wall in your

bedroom.”

Mara cracked up with laughter. “Maybe they can sell tickets.”

“You guys are too funny.” Noah began putting his jacket on

in the tight space.

“Too perverted.” Keegan held his jacket on his lap as the

waitress brought their credit card slips to sign.

Once they had finished the transactions, Keegan stood,

putting his jacket on as Noah made sure he retrieved all the

packages from under the table.

“Oooh! What did you buy?” Karen hurried over to Noah.

Noah didn’t want Karen to find what he had bought for

Keegan, so he held the bags tight and said, “Uh, a couple of gift

certificates, gloves and a scarf for my dad, toys for my nieces

and nephews…”

“Cool.” She looked at Keegan as she put her jacket on. “And

you?”

To Noah’s surprise Keegan handed Karen her gift certificate,

saying, “Merry Christmas.”

Karen whacked Keegan’s arm playfully. “You didn’t have to

give it to me now! And I told you not to buy me anything.”

“You got me the cologne.” He shrugged and Noah could see

how indifferent Keegan was to the whole holiday season.

“Okay! Thanks, Keeg!” Karen got to her toes and kissed

Keegan’s cheek. The four of them walked to the exit of the

restaurant where there was a long line waiting to get in.

Noah felt warm from the interior and when he stepped out

into the night air, it was refreshing.

“Well, we’re headed back into the fray!” Karen smiled

sweetly. “You two boys have fun…err, whatever you decide to

do.” She elbowed Noah. “Take videos for me.” She winked and

she and Mara walked off to the mall’s main entrance.

Keegan hadn’t heard what she said, and he stood still, holding

the bag with the music CDs in it for Noah. “Head back to the

truck?”

“Yup.” In the dark, under the street light’s glow, Noah

walked through the packed parking lot, around distracted drivers,

to where Keegan had parked his pickup truck.
