When Noah first returned from the hospital he had called his mother and told her he loved her. He’d had to.
She was thrilled and reminded him to come to their family dinner on Christmas Day, at noon so he could get to San Diego and back before his six pm shift.
Noah draped his stethoscope over his shoulders and headed out the door. It was five-thirty and pitch black outside. December nights. Long and dark.
The traffic was light for a change so he parked in the employee parking lot and headed to the ER to get his shift underway. As he walked through a security door, sliding his card, which acted as his time-card as well, he could see the medical center was already busy and it was only Wednesday evening. Noah passed a group of firefighters standing and chatting with the nurses. Not Keegan, but still, the flirting between the two—female nurses and hot paramedics and firefighters—was in full swing.
He heard Rio’s shrill laughter and could imagine how hard she was working to get the pants off a fireman.
“Hey, Noah,” Juanita greeted him as she too began her shift with Noah.
“Hello, sweetheart. Did you hear about Bo?”
“I did. I’m so sorry, Noah. I’ll go with you to the funeral if you want.”
He kissed her cheek. “Thanks.”
She spun around at more laughter and whispered to Noah, “Code Red?”
He took a look at the men in uniform. “Nope. Not this time.” He laughed and began his rounds, making sure everyone was cared for and trying to put the passing of Bo behind him. ~
After the spaghetti dinner, Keegan lay on his bunk for a nap. All the men were trying to rest when they could because holidays were busy for cops, firemen, and hospitals. It was just the way it was.
He slept on and off and then heard his phone hum with a text. Lying in the dark room, he reached around for it on the table beside him and looked at the display. It was from Noah and said, ‘thinkn of ya.’
Keegan didn’t hesitate and called him, putting the phone to his ear. Before it even connected, emergency tones sounded and he sat up and shut the phone, racing out of the bunkroom. He bumped into Dwight, who’d been in the room across the hall, looking drowsy as well.
Over the dispatch system came the call, “Man down, CPR being administered, unconscious, non-responsive…”
“Shit.” Keegan raced Dwight out to the paramedic rig and hopped into the driver’s side while Dwight did the same on the passenger’s side. Keegan quickly ignited the lights and sirens and put the pedal to the metal as the loud truck engine roared and he sped over the dark streets.
~
Juanita was manning the phones and relayed to Noah and the rest of the staff that the paramedics were coming in with a nonresponsive patient. Noah gloved up, racing with the rest of the group to wait for the paramedic rig to show up. As they did, a room was being prepared in the trauma area and Juanita kept them updated.
