Eric

I pulled on the smooth brass door handle of the law office, ducked into the blue-green building, and took two stairs at a time to the second floor. The frosted glass of the door before me read, “Sullivan Consultancy,” and I was lucky the owner had agreed to take me on as a client. He was very selective about which cases he represented.

I sat in a leather chair and jiggled my knee, slapping a syncopated rhythm on my thigh with the file folder I’d brought. The good thing about small-town professionals was they got their feet wet in all areas of specialization. Sullivan was no different. After our conversation on the phone, it was clear he had the chops to help me go after Cascadia Oil.

His office smelled like leather, saddle soap, law books, and money.

“This is good,” he told me. “Very good. Where did you get these specs?”

“Let’s just say ‘a reliable inside source.’ Someone else with principles working on the rig who wasn’t willing to stand by and let men get blown to bits when the quakes ruptured high-pressure gas lines. Any idiot can see they’re building way too close to the fault.”

“Well, I think you have standing. And I’m happy to represent you all. These underwater pipeline drawings show dangerous proximity to the Mendocino Fracture Zone. You can serve notice of a legal complaint. The bad P.R. alone will make the owner think twice about proceeding.”

We shook hands, and Sullivan let me know he’d make the case a priority and serve papers within two days’ time.

I ran down the polished and glowing wooden stairs, feeling hopeful.

As soon as I stepped out into the sunlight, I was broad-sided by a woman who appeared to know me, while I couldn’t profess the same.

She grunted in surprise, and then turned to face me. “Oh! Thank goodness you’re still here!”

“How do you know who I am? What’s going on??” I asked.

“We’ve got to hurry!” She snatched my hand up in hers and pulled me down the sidewalk. “Ariella said you’d be here.”

Belinda’s speed was impressive. We sprinted around the corner into the alleyway backing all the stores on this side of Main Street. Then I saw him.

“Get your filthy hands off her!” I roared at him.

Jason had Ariella shoved up against the wall, snarling into her face. He dropped the front lapels of her fuzzy jacket and bolted the other direction.

Only I was faster.

One shove from behind, and he went down eating dirt with a side of gravel dressing. He flailed around to look at me and flapped his arms in a panic, though I had yet to touch him. I placed my work boot on the center of his chest, hard enough to stop his stupid attempts at fighting me off.

“Seems you just can’t keep your mitts off my girl,” I snarled.

“Oh, please. She came on to me. Guess you’re not as much of a man as you thought you were.”

This guy actually had the face of a weasel morphed into a member of the human race.
