Gregory did not look well.
But he did look happy.
He shuffled out of his hiding place, a bottle clasped between his fingers, his knees wobbling like loosened screws. His so-called Mormon aesthetic had fallen out of grace: shirt untucked and missing a button, belt undone, shoelaces left to drag. âI never thought the day would come. Though, I suppose the day hasnât come. But you know what I mean.â His eyes dropped to Johnâs Wholefoods bag. âGetting ready for the road, are you?â
âThatâs right.â
âAnd you thought youâd come down here and help yourself?â
âIs that a problem?â
âNot at all.â Gregory smiled expansively. âExcept why is your bag still empty? Are you overwhelmed by the sheer wonder of our selection?â
âNo.â
âYou sure? Because if you are, Iâd be happy to pack things up for you. Go wait in your truck and Iâll bring out everything you need. Delivery service from your pal Gregory Fleck, free of charge. Shit, Iâll even blow you and your lady a kiss as you drive away.â
John looked back at the shelf. âMariahâs not coming.â
âIs that so?â
âThatâs so.â
âHuh.â Gregory made a thoughtful clucking sound. âAnd the boy?â
âHeâs staying, too.â
âSo itâs only you leaving then?â
âOnly me.â
âAre you sure about that?â
âIâm sure.â
â Absolutely sure?â
John turned around slowly. Gregory was still smiling, but it was a different smile nowâa shrunken, twisted, secretive thing. âWhat are you getting at?â John said.
âNothing. Nothing. I just find myself wondering when exactly you last saw this young companion of yours.â
Johnâs blood cooled by about ten degrees. âWhy?â
âWell, the last time I saw him he was strolling out the front gate.â
The next John knew, heâd driven Gregory into the shadows and pinned him to the wall. The bruiserâs heavy boot heels knocked against each other, no longer touching the floor. A thin, wheezing whistle escaped his throat. John let him drop, took him by the collar, and tossed him back into the light.
âYouâre fast for an old fuck,â Gregory said once heâd finished coughing. âStrong, too.â
âWhen was this?â
âBefore the morning bell.â
âHow long before the morning bell?â
âNot too long.â
âWhere was he going?â
âHow should I know? Itâs not like we exchanged phone numbers.â Sitting on his haunches, breathing hard, Gregory rubbed his neck. âJesus. I didnât think you cared. Always seemed like the kid was stage dressing to you.â
âWhich way did he walk?â
âThereâs only one way to walk from here, except for the airport. And I somehow doubt he was catching a flight.â
Provo.
God help him.
âWhy didnât you tell anyone?â
âI thought about it,â Gregory said, venom stealing into his voice. âI really did. But I justâhowâd you put it to me and Sam back in Mammoth?âI just didnât see how it was any of my business.â
To that, John had no response.
Something teetered and swayed and then collapsed inside the drunk man. His watery eyes took on a peculiar, shimmering brightness. âLook, your boy wouldnât have gone off on his own for no reason, right? He must have talked to somebody. And there was only one other person awake, as far as Iâm aware.
