Chapter Seven

“I’ve made up my mind,” Trina told Warren over breakfast. “I’m going to accept the offer.”

Warren almost choked on his mouthful of toast and egg. He swallowed quickly and spluttered. “Just like that?”

“I had difficulty sleeping, so I thought about it all night.”

“Trina, life as you know it will change completely.”

“I know. But I’ll also be helping to make our country safe, and that’s important. I think it’ll be an exciting, stimulating job. Michael said he wants both of us, so I hope you’ll join me in my decision.”

“I’m not going to let you do this on your own, that’s for damn sure.”

“I’m glad, because I know it’s something you wanted to do when you were younger. We’ll be the team they want us to be. I think we can do a lot of good, especially with the extra abilities we have.”

“They can never know about our shapeshifter abilities. Don’t you dare tell Michael about them. Instead of joining the FBI, they’d put us in a facility for the insane. Or even worse, we’d become guinea pigs.”

“I won’t ever tell anyone, don’t worry. It’s our secret.”

“Okay. You can call him and tell him we’ll go for it.”

“I will. I guess I’ll have to give notice at work. The girls will ask why, but they all know I want to go to college. That’s a good enough excuse.”

“We don’t know enough. I did some research and FBI training is at least for six months, and they ask for a lot of credentials. I would probably qualify, but you sure as hell don’t. I’m still suspicious.”

After breakfast, Trina called Michael. “Hi, it’s me. Can you come over to see us tonight?”

“Does that mean—”

“Nothing at this point. Come tonight so we can talk?”

Michael agreed. “I’ll see you both tonight.”

“He’s coming this evening, Warren. I’m off to work. No, I don’t want you to drive me this morning. I’ll get there on my own. I need to think.”
