Sam pushed the lobby button and collapsed against the side of the elevator. Her body temperature was tropical, but a hand to her forehead didn’t indicate a fever. Memories of all her doctor visits, needle pokes, and surgeries came to life in her brain. She hated hospitals, and she wasn’t done with surgery, not if she wanted to reconstruct her right breast. She breathed deep and exhaled, adjusting her prosthetic before the elevator door opened. Get a grip. Wade was the one in recovery, not her, at least, not now.

As she strolled toward the reception desk, a reality check emboldened her spirits. Next time, she would go under the knife on her timetable; soon, down the road, or never. All she had to worry about was fixing her house and getting home for Christmas. Somehow the damage to her window and porch weren’t as frustrating after hearing about Wade’s accident. She and Cole had survived a storm without a scratch. Wade’s life had been upended on a Sunday afternoon drive. Lord, help me be strong for Cole and his family. Please heal Wade fully from this trauma.

The lady at the welcome desk pointed her in the direction of the cafeteria. Most of the tables were empty except for a few people in scrubs. A cashier waited in front of a take-out refrigerator as most of the kitchen was dark and without a chef or server in sight. Even hospital cafeteria workers needed a rest at 6:45 PM on a Sunday. Sam grabbed a few sandwiches and drinks and paid the cashier whose coral jacket reminded her of Gretta.

Why hadn’t Ernie and Gretta’s son come to check on them after the storm? He could have strung Christmas lights. Was that why Ted had left her his house, so she could help his family? Ted had gone on and on about the mild winters in Tennessee, trying to coax her parents into buying property nearby. A visit to Whispering Creek was postponed by her diagnosis and surgery, but God’s timing was perfect. Maybe she needed to be in Tennessee now.

Rejoice in the Lord always. She didn’t rejoice in Ted’s passing, but she rejoiced knowing Ted had a mansion in heaven that was storm proof.

She carried her bag of food to a table and noticed a woman sitting alone picking at her sandwich. If by some prearranged cue, the dark-haired woman glanced at Sam. Those were the same eyes and nose as her houseguest. A cool shiver washed over Sam. If the woman wasn’t Cole’s mom, then a DNA swab was justified. Should she ask? Better to introduce herself and be dismissed than to explain a snub if they met later on.

Walking toward the table, Sam gave what she hoped was a comforting smile. “Mrs. Donoven?”

The woman’s eyes widened. Her alert meter skyrocketed.

“I’m Samantha Williams.” Sam gauged if she had made the right call. “I’m a friend of Ted Beckman’s and …”

“Cole’s here?” The woman stood and waved for Sam to join her.

“I think Cole is seeing Wade as we speak.
