We need to make the children aware of these dangers (in ways that do not cause undue alarm) and teach them how to avoid harm, develop sound judgement and be willing to seek adult advice if they suspect they are being targeted.

Flexibility

National guidelines do not prescribe any particular hardware or software that the children should learn about or use. So, as well as becoming skilled in the use of the particular equipment and programs they use in school, the children also need to learn the principles of how these work, so that they will be able to make use of other electronic equipment as well, wherever they meet it, both now and in the future.

For example, it is particularly useful to know why passwords are so important, how to save and retrieve data, how to find their way around menus, how to access help files; and to appreciate that these are just machines – they can go wrong, they are not intelligent, they just perform routines, and they cannot make our decisions for us – that is our responsibility.
