Chapter 12
UNANNOUNCED
On October 20, Troopers Evans and Lilly paid an unannounced visit to Wallyâs residence at Little Creek. There was no answer at the door of the main house. They went to the guesthouse, where a person answered the door and said that Wally was not home, but Olga was at a house just down the road. The officers drove down to the property next door, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Pam Lucas, and found Olga there.
According to the state police report, the conversation did not yield much information.
âHello, Mrs. Thrasher. We need to talk to your husband,â Trooper Evans said.
âHe is gone on a business trip,â Olga replied.
âWhen will he be home?â
âI donât know.â
âWhen did you last speak with him?â
âLast night.â
âDo you know when he will call you again?â
âTonight.â
âWe need to talk to him as soon as possible.â
âI will tell him that.â
âHow many planes does your husband own?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat can you tell us about the Beechcraft Bonanza he owns?â
âI donât know anything about it.â
âWhat does your husband do for a living, Mrs. Thrasher?â
âHe has his own private business.â
âCould you tell us what kind of business?â
âI donât make a habit of discussing my husbandâs private business.â
Realizing that his direct questions were not getting him anywhere, Trooper Evans then tried to appeal to a nobler motive.
âMrs. Thrasher, there was a man killed in that plane crash, and we have not been able to identify him,â he said. âSomewhere out there, that manâs loved ones are waiting for him to come home. They are wondering where he is. And he will not be coming home. We need to let them know what happened to him.â
Olga was silent for a few moments, absorbing the gravity of what Trooper Evans said. âI will tell my husband to contact you,â she said sincerely as she closed the door.
Olga would later think back and say, âIâll never forget how I felt at that moment, how upset I was that such a terrible tragedy had happened. A man had lost his life and things had just gotten completely out of control. Needless to say, I felt awful for Mark Bailey and his family, that they would never see him again.â
Early the following morning, October 21, Trooper Evans received a phone call from Attorney Max Jenkins.
âGood morning, Trooper Evans,â Jenkins said. âI understand you stopped by the Thrasher residence last night. I am calling to inform you that I am representing Wallace Thrasher. So, if you would like to speak to him, please contact me.â
âOkay, thenâ¦I need to talk to Wallace Thrasher,â Trooper Evans said, shaking his head at the rigmarole.
Jenkins said: âIt is my practice to advise my clients not to speak to the police and to let me handle the communication.â
Trooper Evans replied: âWell, as you know, Mr. Jenkins, we have a dead pilot in the plane crash, and we need to identify him. We know that the plane belonged to Wallace Thrasher, and we believe that he can help in identifying the bodyâ¦so it is imperative that we talk to him as soon as possible.
