Eleven

Norah couldn’t bear to take her hand off Perry’s back. From the minute they met, there had been something between them. Perry was more than just the person who eavesdropped on her conversation and accidentally confirmed that Liv’s did, in fact, make an incredible café miel. Hundreds of those coffees later, Norah realized she had come to think of Perry as invincible. And she very nearly was. Between Rhodes, Nguyen, and Perry herself, they did an incredible job staying out of trouble. But, Perry put herself into an unanticipated situation for Norah, and hearing her get arrested, hearing her tell them not to shoot, living for hours wondering what they were going to do to her, what they’d already done to her… Norah did not like living through that.

She would need to send Delta and Suarez bouquets of flowers or fruit or whatever the hell they wanted as thanks for their help bringing Perry home. She didn’t understand exactly how their network worked, or who was in it, but they didn’t know exactly who was working with the other side and planting laptops either. Those were questions for another day, a day when Perry was out of danger.

Rhodes had calmed down from getting Perry back and, with her help, he was back in regular Rhodes mode, with just a slightly more frantic edge. The looks he gave Perry to check she was still there were so similar to the ones Norah was giving her, just filled with a different kind of love. Perry was his best friend, his family. And she was Norah’s family too, just in a more romantic way.

A clock in the corner was counting down how much time they had to figure this whole thing out. Norah simultaneously never wanted to take her eyes off it and never see it again in her life. They’d already lost several hours catching up with what had happened to Perry, telling her what they’d found, and generally fussing over her now she was back. And now they were waiting on access to her dad’s bank, which was taking longer than usual.

“Okay,” Nguyen said triumphantly, “I’m in.”

“That wasn’t easy,” Perry observed.

“It wasn’t too hard. I’ve had way worse.”

“Yeah, but that’s you. You’re good at what you do. How would anyone at that police station be figuring this stuff out in a couple of minutes?” Perry had mostly put on a brave face after they returned home, but there was that pucker between her eyebrows that had yet to leave. It only deepened as she thought through the things that didn’t make sense.

“I’m guessing,” Nguyen said, sidestepping the compliments, despite looking delighted at Perry complimenting him, “that the computer they had access to had an easy in. The papers you sent Norah back with were an easy-to-follow map, right to Laird Hill. It stands to reason that they’d be doing the same with the police, leading them to him, almost too easily, but with just enough cover to imply the hacker who did it was new and inexperienced.
