Charlotte did not stop running until she reached the sanctuary of Lady Abigail’s suite. She slammed the door shut behind her and leaned against it, chest heaving.

"Charlotte? Is that you?"

Lady Abigail sat up in bed, her blonde curls in disarray. She blinked sleepily at Charlotte.

"Oh thank heavens!" Lady Abigail exclaimed. "I was so worried when you did not return. Are you quite all right?"

Charlotte slowly caught her breath and nodded, though in truth she was anything but all right. Her body still thrummed from Thornfield's touch, the imprint of his lips seared into her neck.

"I am well, my lady," Charlotte said, once she could speak evenly. "Just very tired. I think we have both had enough excitement for one night."

Lady Abigail's eyes lit up. "Oh, do tell me what happened! I want to hear every detail. Was it perfectly thrilling?"

Charlotte shook her head wearily. "Another time, my lady. For now, let us bar the door and try to get some rest."

Lady Abigail pouted prettily but allowed Charlotte to secure the door. As Charlotte took off the red silk gown, and readied herself for bed, her mind continued to whirl with all she had witnessed that night. She had thought Lady Abigail naive, but now she wondered if it was she who was the true innocent.

Thornfield was right, she realized with a shiver. Her curiosity was far from sated. But she could not let him lead her further into indecency, no matter how her treacherous body seemed to crave his touch.

As Charlotte drifted off into uneasy sleep, she knew one thing for certain — she must keep her distance from Thornfield, or risk losing herself completely.
