After lunch, I couldn’t wait to see what was so different about a garden in Costa Rica. Marco pointed to a small table with tiny glass bottles sitting on top. This garden was already a weird one.

“Hola!” said a man filling up the bottles with red water. “Have you come to feed my birds for me?”

“We have,” said Marco. “This is Mr. Hernandez, everyone.”

“And these are our friends, the O’Bannings,” said Tica.

“Buenas tardes,” I said.

“Good afternoon to you too!” said Mr. Hernandez, as he handed me one of the red water bottles. “Watch what happens if you sit here and hold the bottle like this.”

All of a sudden a hummingbird zoomed in and sat right on my finger! It stuck its long beak into the bottle and drank the red water inside. I looked over at Nana, and one was eating out of her bottle too.

“Wow! Whatever this stuff is, it must be good.”

“It’s a type of sugar water,” said Mr. Hernandez. “And the red color reminds the birds of flowers in the jungle.”

“They must have a sweet tooth!” said Katie. “It does look kind of tasty.”

“Don’t get any ideas,” I giggled. “You need to stick with flaming burritos!”

I couldn’t help but notice that Marco laughed at my joke.
