CHAPTER 13

Danny

I glanced up at Theo’s office door, my teeth gritted in agitation. It was cracked open the slightest bit, and I could still hear him on the phone. As much as I wanted to transfer this asshole to Theo so he could deal with the situation, I knew Theo’s call was much more important.

“I understand that you’re upset, Mr. Garner,” I said for the umpteenth time, “but Mr. Finnegan is currently not available. I can have him call you back—”

“I’m not playing this phone game with him!” Mr. Garner shouted at me. I bit back a sigh and pinched the bridge of my nose. I could feel my blood pressure rising, and a headache was beginning to throb at my temples. “You listen here, boy. Either he takes this phone call right now, or I’ll have my attorney begin filing the paperwork to sue him.”

Over what? Wasting his time? Could I counter-sue him for wasting mine? Theo was a busy man, and this call was stupid to begin with.

Rich people threw around the threat of lawsuits like they were asking about the weather.

“Mr. Garner—”

“Why do you keep saying my name? Are you irritated, boy? I’ll sue you, too—”

Theo’s door suddenly opened. His jaw was clenched, and his eyes were narrowed on the phone I was holding in my hand. “Transfer the call. Now,” he ordered.

I nodded, my shoulders deflating in relief. “I’m transferring you now, Mr. Garner.”

Immediately—before Mr. Garner could yell at me again—I pressed the buttons on the phone to transfer the call to Theo before hanging the phone up. Then, I braced my elbows on my desk and covered my face with my hands, releasing a long, loud groan.

The elevator dinged behind me. Dropping my hands, I turned to look at Noah and Thomas as they strode onto our floor. Noah was holding his folders close to his chest, and he was smiling. But one look at my face had the happy expression on his falling away.

I hated that I made him worry.

“Danny?” he asked softly. “You okay?”

“Mmm,” I hummed under my breath, not saying yes or no. His frown deepened. My temples throbbed. “How did the meeting go?”

“The meeting went well,” Thomas answered for him. I watched as he dropped a kiss to the top of Noah’s dark curls. “Go on and type those notes up for me, sweet boy.” Then, he looked at me. “My office.”

Sighing, I stood from my desk and followed him to his office. What I wanted was some pain pills, not a lecture or whatever the hell Thomas had on his mind.

Thomas shut the door behind us before wrapping his hand around the side of my neck and backing me up against his door. My breath hitched in my throat, and my heart began to hammer against my breastbone. Thomas and I had been flirting and touching, but he’d never advanced on me like this before.

I was more than ready for whatever he was about to do to me. Headache be damned.
