Chapter 11 – Blood

I padded up the stairs scanning the corridor and my eyes froze on a shoe. I recognized it right away as one of the few things Fin spends a good chunk of change on. She walked over a dozen miles a day, so she had special flats she wore. They were hybrid walking and running shoe that kept her feet comfortable all day. They looked really cute in combination with her sundresses.

Narrowing my eyes at the shoe I looked up the next flight of stairs then the shoe again. How could she lose a shoe like that? They were form-fitting and tied tight. I've seen her dive over a hedge in a full sprint to recover a dog before and she rolled up in a run and those shoes never slid off then, how did...

A diversion. She was slowing this Lenny guy down in his pursuit of them. He'd see that and think they were on this level. I looked up the stairs again and lowered my weapon. Damn it Finny. I couldn't ignore search and rescue procedures on the chance my girl was as smart as I think she is. If this is the one time I guess wrong about her intentions, it could cost us all.

I growled out in frustration, causing Cal and Buttons to growl too, and I raised the weapon again and started a proper search. Door to door. Most of which were open, telling me they'd already been searched. Most were empty storage rooms, and some had tables and chairs stacked in them. One had construction materials covered in a heavy layer of dust.

Nothing.

I reached the far end of the hall to find another set of transverse stairs heading up but not down. I looked at my four-footed companions. “Shall we?” Hearing no better ideas from them, we headed up.

Since I met Finnegan, I've found myself in a situation I had never been in before. I prided myself on being able to detach myself emotionally from the cases I've been assigned to. I was no good to victims or their families if I let the sometimes borderline evil things human beings did to each other, affect me so much that I was driven by anger or fear for those people I tried to give a voice to.

That approach to police work, as well as my drive to make sure these sick fucks didn't make anyone else a victim, is why I had the highest case closure rate in the precinct and is part of why the other officers in the 19th bestowed the Ice Queen moniker on me.

In fact, it was my single-minded drive and my emotional detachment I could affect that scared off any partners the department has tried saddling me with over the years. Well except for my sometimes partner, Flannery, but he was as crazy as fuck and always has my back when shit gets real. I preferred to work alone.
