âHave you tried talking to him?â Lanny asked at a normal volume.
Nominally, this was a stakeout.
âNo talking on stakeouts,â I whispered.
It had been easy to follow Eli here. His story about the job interview had been a classic deflectionâanything to let him escape from feeling vulnerableâand while Eli was creative and intelligent and thoughtful in so many ways, he was fairly predictable when it came to his escape routes. Iâd bundled Lanny into the Ford with a little white lie, and weâd spotted Eli on our third sweep, just as he was getting into the Uber. After that, weâd followed him to DuPage Parish and Balmoral Castles. I wasnât sure what he wanted to see behind Ivyâs trailer, but I was giving him five more minutes before I went looking for him.
âBecause Doggo, sometimes you make assumptions. So maybe you should talk to him.â
âIâm the one whoâs good at communicating,â I whispered. âIâm the one whoâs always making the effort. Iâm the one, even when it means dragging things out of him because he wants to say them but he doesnât know how.â
âRight, but, I mean, sometimes you do that thing where youâre so focused on taking care of the other person that, um, maybe you donât see the big picture.â
âNo. Talking.â
I donât even think we made it thirty seconds before Lanny whispered, âLike with usââ
âNo. We are not doing that. We are never doing that. You wouldnât even be here if you hadnât assaulted my boyfriend, I mean, no labels, and if you hadnât snitched on a witch and then tried to attack the scariest-looking woman Iâve ever seen.â
âI was doing what you told me to. You said we were going to find a way to work things out, make things right between us, and then you told me when that lady wasnât ready, I should hit herââ
âI never said any of that.â The whistle had a strained, shrill quality, and Dag had to work on his breathing for a moment. âLanny, I feel like Iâve been really cool considering you cheated on me and stole all my money and left without any sort of goodbye and basically made me feel like the stupidest, most worthless person in existence, but if you donât stop talking, I am going to lose my mind.â
In a surprisingly wounded tone, Lanny said, âI didnât cheat on you, Doggo.â
I rolled my eyes. Then I looked at the dashboard clock. Eli got two more minutes before I dragged him into the car.
âI didnât,â Lanny said. âHand to God. And I left you a note.â
âA grocery list that only includes your favorite breakfast cereals does not count as a breakup-and-goodbye-and-I-stole-your-life-savings note.â
âNo, I left you a note. With Bren.â
I shook my head.
âI did! He didnât give it to you?â
âNo, Lanny. He didnât give it to me. Heâs the one who told me about all the guys youâd been sleeping with behind my back.â
âThatâs because he wanted to bone you. Well, he wanted you to bone him.â
âHe was nice to us because I helped him with his fence.
