CHAPTER 25

Was That a Unicorn?

At first Cassandra didn’t want to go. She didn’t understand why James would want his sister at his girlfriend’s house. James didn’t quite know either, and he certainly didn’t know why Bridget requested Cassandra be there. He simply told Cassandra he would like her to become a friend of Bridget’s. Andrew was happy to go, if only for the horse ride. Even CC put her ears forward and didn’t seem so snappy.

Bridget arrived at James’s parents’ property early in the morning while riding Lightning bareback, to escort them to her place, the Rosewell home. James saddled Des. Cassandra, who had just exercised Jet, saddled her mother’s palomino mare Golden Dream. Valery was busy working and had asked Cassandra to exercise Golden for her. They set off down the road, Cassandra and Andrew side by side behind James and Bridget.

Bridget got the four of them talking and laughing in the winter sunshine. The mountains were snowy, and the air was crisp. Everything was familiar. They were relaxed and having a great time, not paying much attention to their surroundings.

But suddenly they realised everything looked a lot different.

Cassandra stared around her with disbelieving eyes. The countryside was spring green and the Casyarna Mountains weren’t there anymore. And was that a unicorn she saw cantering between trees over to their right? She pulled Golden to a stop, closed her eyes briefly, and opened them again only to find this was real. Her face went white. She thought about her mother’s science fiction books. They couldn’t be real, could they?

James and Andrew had also stopped their horses to take in their new surroundings.

Bridget turned her horse to face theirs. “Welcome to our world. Please don’t be afraid. I know all this is strange to you. We’ll take our time so you can get used to this place.”

“Where exactly are we?” James asked.

“We’re in the Centre World,” Bridget replied.

“What? Where?” Andrew asked.

Bridget shrugged. “Centre World, World of Three Moons, World of the Gods. Where creatures from your world both mythical and extinct coexist. Where Cassandra and Andrew will realise their power. Where—”

“Enough!” Cassandra cried, shaking now. She didn’t understand anything Bridget was saying.

Andrew dismounted. Stepping over to Golden, he pulled his girlfriend off the palomino to hold her in his arms. He refused to get upset.

James was curious. He was also amused. World of the Gods? He couldn’t help slipping in a smart comment. “So is your middle name Heaven?” he asked.

Bridget stared at him. “No, it’s Sky,” she said seriously.

James grinned affectionately at her.

“Can you grow wings like an Angel and fly?” he asked cheekily.

Bridget was about to reply when they heard a great swooping noise above their heads. A shadow falling over them caused them all to look up as one.

There flew a magnificent white horse, its beautiful, feathered wings flapping lazily.

James’s mouth dropped open, much to Bridget’s satisfaction.

The horse flew off into the distance.

There was a moment of silence, and then Cassandra asked if this was a joke or not.
