MICHAELA left the cabin after she set the girls up playing puzzles and board games. She needed a breather. Jem was going to be fine after her fainting spell, but Michaela still found herself worrying about her more than the other girls combined.
Not just worrying, but thinking about Jem in general.
She strolled along the beach until she found herself padding up to Katherineâs office.
Whyâd I come here?
She knocked on the door and waited. Maybe Katherine wouldnât even be there. But then sheâd have to come up with some other excuse to stay away from the cabin.
âDoorâs open!â
Michaela entered and found Katherine looking over paperwork.
âHowâs the girl doing?â Katherine asked.
âSheâs just fine.â
âGreat to hear.â Katherine set the paper down, smiling. âWe may have to rethink some of the outdoors exercises. Iâd hate for another child to pass out again.â
âGood idea.â Michaela shuffled her feet. It was strange how just being in Katherineâs presence made her feel more clear-headed. She could see Jem through Katherineâs eyes, as a troubled young woman in need of help. Not somebody to moon over. Katherineâs certainty was infectious. It was the reason Michaela always found herself at Katherineâs office whenever wrong thoughts began trickling back into her head.
Katherine played with her wedding ring. âIs there anything else, Michaela?â
âI guess not.â She didnât move.
âIâm most proud of you,â Katherine said softly. âYou are my greatest success story. I pray the girls will follow your lead.â
âThanks.â Michaela considered leaving, but found herself asking a question. âDo you ever think weâre too harsh on them?â
âThe campers?â Michaela nodded and Katherine sighed. âTo be honest, sometimes I think we are. But weâre helping them; youâre proof of that. The ones who see sense always write to me thanking me. They send photos of their partners and theyâre happy.â
Michaela was surprised at the sad light in Katherineâs eyes. There seemed to be more to it than that. Regret, maybe. Katherine had her own troubled past.
âIâm sure theyâd be proud of what youâve accomplished,â Michaela said.
âThank you.â Katherineâs voice held none of its usual brittleness.
âWell, I should get back to the girls.â
Katherine nodded, returning to her paperwork.
Michaela shut the office door behind her and made her way between the cabins. Seeing Katherine was exactly what sheâd needed. Finding the girls still playing board games, she made sure to give all of them her equal attention.
