Chapter 21

The Cadaverous Blog: Post 21

Of all the people to share the blame for my current predicament, it would be Lisa Baker. I’d known of her throughout my school years and only noticed her when she and Mitch were a thing. Her deep spiritual need and endless curiosity brought us together. Showing me the way to gain Paimon’s blessing certainly changed the course of my life and of those around me. Though she has a part in my story, I am far more to blame than her. Whatever unfolds after all this, I want it to be clear: Lisa offered me only what I wanted. She never forced a thing on me. Her actions were intended for my success.

And they worked.

Our show gained instant notoriety. The man murdered in the pit was a twenty-five-year-old barista from a local coffee shop. He had no significant other in his life and only his mom still lived. I felt bad for her loss. The guy didn’t ask for it, but his sacrifice meant everything.

It was that moment, that singular act, which sparked the switch inside of me. I knew it was Lisa before we were escorted off the stage. I knew why she’d done it. I suppose I should be ashamed of my first thoughts after understanding the situation, but I wasn’t. How could I? She’d committed an act that was required of me, but on my behalf in order to appease my patron because I’d failed to act appropriately.

Before that moment, I never dreamed I could take the life of another. There were some people I wouldn’t mind seeing hurt, like Jayce and Buck, but killing them? That was a whole other level I wasn’t prepared to explore. Until Lisa’s selfless act.

The instant gratification I experienced when she sacrificed that guy was intoxicating. I didn’t know that caused it at that moment, but when the flood of chords filled my head and the flawless execution of the song seeped into my hands, I knew I had Paimon’s attention once again. It filled me with such joy that I never wanted to be without it. I suppose I’m like an addict in that way, but until you have such an epiphany, you will never know the feeling.

When Lisa ran out of the club and the dead body lay on the floor, I knew where the source of my ecstasy had come from, and I wanted more. What she’d told me before the show struck home. Paimon wanted blood. Not mine, but that of others. It was a ritual I was to perform to appease his lust. In return, I’d never be without the ability to play ever again. I only needed to follow his word.

Lisa was never suspected of the crime. The club didn’t have cameras and in the flashing lights, no one saw a thing. Even when she slipped out the door, no one was paying attention to her other than me.

After the police finished their questioning, we were let go. The rest of the guys in the band were shaken up.
