Chapter Ten

“Chuck, what on earth has gotten into you?” Bri kept her voice down, not wanting to alert Rafe. What she really wanted to do was scream at the idiot.

He’d come in a minute ago, taking her by surprise. None of the hands came into the house, unless invited, which pretty much didn’t happen unless Cord had a holiday party. The guys had their own bunkhouse with everything they needed.

“Chuck, stop it.” She swatted his hand away from her face.

“Hold on, darlin’, you had a little flour or something on your cheek. That’s all.”

“I’m not your darling and I didn’t invite you to come into the house.”

He reared his head back, looking offended. “I heard you yelp and thought you were in trouble. I was tryin’ to help out, darlin’, that’s all.”

“I didn’t yelp.” She moved away from him and turned to the pot on the stove, pretending to stir the lamb. “I burned my finger on the stove and reacted.”

“Let Chuck have a look at that finger. I’ll kiss it and make it all better.” He picked up her hand but she yanked it away.

“Stop it, Chuck. I mean it.”

He looked her up and down, lingering on the exposed part of her thighs just below her hem. “You’re lookin’ mighty fine tonight, Brianna. Makes my mouth water for next Saturday.”

The thought of going to the dance with him made her stomach turn. She made up her mind she wouldn’t go. Let him or any of the other hands think what they want about her and Rafe. “You need to leave.”

He gave her a cocky smile. “Now, you didn’t dress like that not to be noticed.”

He moved closer and she backed up. “Hmm, you smell damn good, too.”

She found herself in the corner, trapped between him and the counter. He put a hand on her hip and bowed his head, his mouth inches from her throat. “Chuck, get your hand off me, or you can pack up your things and get off the ranch.”

He laughed. “You sayin’ you’d fire me?”

“Yes.”

“Without big brother to tell you what to do?”

“Get out.” Her voice shook, not from fear but anger and humiliation. “Right now.”

He hesitated, uncertainty in his face. She wouldn’t look away but glared back.

“You heard Brianna.” Rafe’s quiet, deep voice sliced through the air between them.

Chuck took an automatic step back. He turned toward Rafe. “This is between me and Bri here. You got no call to stick your nose in.” Brave words but his cocky tone had slipped.

Rafe moved closer. “And she asked you to leave.” He smiled. “Now.”

Chuck’s jaw clenched. He gave Rafe one last resentful glare and then looked at Bri. “I’ll talk to you later.”

“Only to pick up your final check.” She realized she’d been cowering and straightened. “It’ll be ready in a week, but you leave today.”

His jaw slackened in disbelief. “You’re not serious.”

Bri went to the phone and dialed the bunkhouse extension. “Hi, Manny, it’s Brianna. I need a favor.” Her hands shook but she tried not to think about that.
