TWENTY-SEVEN

The Citadel

Six Rivers National Forest

Humboldt County, California

Even with the warning from his source, Tito hadn’t heard the beat of the helicopter until it was nearly on top of them. Luckily the Marines were well trained, and before he could tell them to get down, they were already diving for cover. Tito was quick to follow and unslung his rifle before quickly wedging himself into a spot of scrub next to a lopsided boulder.

Professionally he was annoyed that he hadn’t heard the helicopter’s return, but considering the way the sound bounced off the ragged peaks, he knew it wasn’t fair to blame himself. Tito recognized the Black Hawk from his time with the army, and he watched as the pilot settled into a hover over the fire that had been ignited by his driver’s errant flash-bang. As pissed as he was about Enrique, the two bullets he’d taken to the chest were more than enough to pay for his stupidity, and while Matt and Johnny had done their best to patch him up, Tito knew he wasn’t long for this world.

What he didn’t know was who was inside the helicopter, which was why he had Ringo and Nash pulling security.

The answer came a second later, when two men leaped from the cargo hold. From the way they handled the chutes, Tito’s first thought was they had to be military. But instead of the assault rifles he was expecting them to remove from their bags when they hit the ground, the men pulled out yellow hard hats and quickly got to work putting out the brush fire.

What is going on?

“They’re smokejumpers,” Johnny hissed. “Firefighters.”

It was too absurd to believe, but there was no denying what was in front of him. Not that it mattered. Boone was dead, and all that was left was getting out of the mountains and back to their safe house in Eureka. Then it was off to a nonextradition country for a much-needed break.

Let them waste their energy trying to put the fire out.

“Boss,” Johnny hissed.

Tito looked up to see that the fire was out and one of the men was now moving quickly toward the cabin. His instinct was to kill the man, but hearing the echo of the helicopter somewhere to his rear, he was loath to give away their position unless it was absolutely necessary. Besides, the smokejumpers weren’t a threat, and the only thing waiting for them inside was Boone’s dead body.

He’d been tough, Tito had to give him that, but in the end, there was only so much punishment a body could take. Tito was an expert on dispensing pain. An artist who treated each victim like a potential masterpiece. In a perfect world, he liked to take his time—introduce his victims to levels of agony they hadn’t known even existed—which was exactly what he’d wanted to do with Boone.

Unfortunately, time was not on his side, and Tito had been forced to beat on the man until his heart stopped. He’d checked his
